Mills and Boon and me
Everyone's heard of a guilty read. Our often inexplicable penchant for fun reads we devour in one sitting, and leave us wanting more. For some it's paranormal romance, for others it's teen fiction; but for a lot of Australian readers it's a Mills and Boon romance novel.
Mills and Boon is more than heroes and romance, for many the theme of salvation crops up.
Michelle Styles (popular Mills and Boon author) notes that people read these books during the worst times of their lives - when they are waiting for chemotherapy, or are housebound or finding out their partner has left them. Mills and Boon authors are very conscious of the role they play in providing a fantasy escape when we need it most, where there will always be a happy ending and a life worth believing in.
Furthermore, a Mills and Boon novel is short and sharp - a read we can achieve - the sense of accomplishment is valuable within itself.
Mills and Boon authors are also ever mindful of the intelligence of their modern readers. As best selling author Emma Healey claims, reading Mills and Boon made her a better writer. The dialogue is sharp, the pace is snappy, plots are kept driven and the reader is engaged. With 12 genres available today; from historical to western to suspense, medical, modern or Australian outback, there is something to suit most tastes.
So let's all try Mills and Boon. It may be time to stop explaining them away as your "guilty read" and start lauding them for the lifesaving balm they provide.
